Psalm 119

With 176 verses, Psalm 119 is both the longest Psalm and the longest chapter in the Bible.  The Psalm is also an alphabetic acrostic poem.  That means the Psalm is “divided into twenty-two stanzas, one stanza for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet; within each stanza, each of the eight verses begins (in Hebrew) with that letter.” (Roland Murphy, The Gift of the Psalms)

Although it contains many themes, one of the prominent themes is the importance and beauty of God’s word.  Murphy continues, “Employed in almost (but not quite) every verse of the psalm is a synonym for the Torah, such as dabar (‘word, promise’) mishpatim (‘rulings’), etc.”

When thinking of a song that talks of the beauty of God’s word for directing our paths, one that quickly comes to mind is “Thy Word,” taken from Psalm 119:105.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

And there is no duo who sings it better than Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith:

All is well,

Lisa
