Isaiah 8 Prayer

Following is the prayer based on Isaiah 8 used at the end of today’s service.  Jim led the congregation in this responsive prayer saying the words in regular print, and the words in italics were said aloud by the congregation. The prayer incorporates the three encouragements from the LORD to us from the Isaiah 8. Due to time, it had to be shortened this morning but we wanted to post the entire prayer.

Heavenly Father, we come to you as your people, your children, your beloved. Thank you that although just the very edge of your robe fills the entire temple we can boldly come to the heavenly throne room.

Most merciful God, we come asking for your forgiveness for the ways we have sinned against you, and you alone, in our words, our thoughts and our deeds. Today, we acknowledge that our fear of this world causes us to have divided hearts. We confess that in our fear of our circumstances we often turn first to human solutions of power, money, manipulation and slander. Forgive us. Please give us undivided hearts that we may fear your name.

We ask for forgiveness for the ways in which we have sinned by not fearing you alone. In the quietness of this morning, search us, O God, and know our hearts; test us and know our anxious thoughts; see if there is any offensive way in us.

Thank you for the community of believers gathered here and in communities and towns across the world, each church a sign of the promise that you are with us and the gates of hell will not prevail. Forgive us for the ways we fail to value the gift of this community.
Thank you for being present with us as we gather as your body in the midst of a broken and fearful world. Strengthen your church to stand strong and proclaim your good news.
Prince of Peace, thank you that you never speak fear into our hearts but always words of peace. When all the words we hear swirling around us increase our fears, worries and anxieties, remind us of your peace that passes all understanding. Help us to acknowledge the lies and fears that fill our minds and cause us anxiety so that we do not remain in captivity to them.
Lord, help us to lay each one of these fears at your feet today. Tomorrow, give us courage to give them over to you again. Help us to recognize that fear does not come from you but from Satan who wishes to enslave and harm us.
Loving Shepherd, fill us with your promises from Isaiah that renew our strength each day: You will keep in perfect peace all whose mind is steadfast because they trust in you. LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us. The fruit of righteousness will be peace…we will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. The nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales. You sit enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.

Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty, the whole earth is full of His glory.

Amen.
