The treasure trove of 15 psalms known as the Psalms of Ascent are found near the end of the book of Psalms. As a collection, they are not only beautiful poetry but they were used by the Jews as part of their religious festivals celebrations. This picture is a recent view of the Southern Steps. In Jesus’ day, they would have led up to a gate to allow worshippers to enter the temple in Jerusalem. The Psalms of Ascent would have been sung or chanted while people climbed these steps.
