I’m honored that the Our Daily Bread devotional that appears on Juneteenth 2025 is one I wrote about a remarkable woman named Phyllis Wheatley. Enslaved as a young child, Wheatley was bought by a wealthy family in Boston. Wheatley’s literary abilities became obvious to her family and her talents helped her secure her freedom.
It’s a complicated story but her poems and letters inspired some Christians to recognize the evils of slavery and become involved in abolitionist efforts.
